The mystery of the label — Parent note
The one learning idea
The aim is to distinguish an ingredient’s identity from its role. An ingredient list becomes an invitation to investigate with a parent. Names are not ranked as good or bad according to length or origin.
Name and function
AQUA is introduced as the shared name for water on cosmetic ingredient labels. Glycerin illustrates a humectant role, while acknowledging that ingredients can serve several purposes. A particular function is considered within the formula.
Information and assessment
A name appearing in CosIng does not, by itself, authorise use or certify safety. Parents consider intended use, directions and the finished product. The episode does not replace product instructions or professional guidance.
A safe conversation
Choose a closed package yourself, or use paper cards only. Do not open, taste, sniff closely or apply products. Medicines are not play materials.
Questions that leave room
Ask: what is its name? What role might it have? What do we not know yet? Pointing, drawing or talking are equally welcome. Reading and memorisation are not required.
